Our story

A little studio above the bookshop.

Quill Tutors started in 2009 when Eleanor Hartley, a former primary teacher, began helping a handful of neighbours' children with their reading at her kitchen table. Word got around, the table filled up, and within a year she had taken the two rooms above the old bookshop on Turl Street where we still teach today.

We have stayed deliberately small. Nobody here teaches to a script and nobody is rushed through a syllabus. A session might start with a bit of grammar and end with a conversation about a book someone couldn't put down, and that is rather the point: we want children to feel that the work is theirs, not something being done to them.

Over the years we have grown from one tutor to a team of four, added maths, science and languages to the timetable, and helped families through Key Stage assessments, the 11-plus, GCSEs and A-levels. What has not changed is the size of a group, the warmth of the rooms, or the biscuit tin by the kettle.

We are a five-minute walk from the market, we know most of the local schools by name, and we are happy to talk things through with parents before anyone signs up to anything. The first session is always free, and there is never any pressure to book a term.

How it works

Three easy steps

No forms to fill in twice, no long tie-in. We start with a chat and see if we are the right fit.

1

Say hello

Call us or send the form below. We will ask a few gentle questions about your child's school, their year group and what feels tricky right now.

2

A free first session

Your child comes in for an hour so we can see how they work and they can see the rooms. No commitment, and no charge for this one.

3

Settle into a slot

If it feels right, we find a regular weekly slot and share a short plan with you. You will get a quick note home after each half-term.

Meet the tutors

Four people, one biscuit tin

Every tutor here is a qualified teacher and DBS-checked. You will always know exactly who is teaching your child.

Eleanor Hartley

Founder · English

Taught primary for eleven years before starting Quill. Reads more children's fiction than anyone should and is a soft touch for a good story.

Marcus Adeyemi

Maths & Science

Ex-secondary maths teacher who can make algebra feel like a puzzle rather than a punishment. Runs the GCSE revision clinics.

Priya Nair

French & Spanish

Grew up bilingual and teaches languages the way she learned them, out loud and unafraid of a few mistakes. Also our 11-plus reasoning lead.

Tom Beckett

A-Level & UCAS

Marks exams in the summer so knows exactly what earns the marks. Patient with personal statements and a stickler for a clear argument.

What families say

Kind words from the kitchen table

"My daughter went from dreading reading aloud to volunteering for it in class. Eleanor never once made her feel behind."

"Marcus turned my son's maths around before the GCSEs. Calm, clear, and he actually explained why the method works instead of just the trick."

"Priya prepped both our girls for the 11-plus without any of the panic we saw elsewhere. Honest about how they were doing the whole way through."
